DECEMBER 7 – BEND FAMILY HOLIDAY FESTIVAL! 1:00 – 3:00 pm at the Bend Armory, 875 SW Simpson Ave, Bend, OR 97702. Open to all Military-oriented families. DECEMBER 7 – FESTIVAL OF TREES! on Saturday, December 7 from 10 am – 2 pm. Admission is free. Deschutes County Fair and Expo Center Gala event and live auction: 5 – 9 pm. Tickets: https://www.hospiceofredmond.org/festival-of-trees/ or call 541-548-7483.

DECEMBER 7 – REMEMBER PEARL HARBOR! – the 78th anniversary of the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor which propelled our nation into WWII. This Saturday, 12-7-19, the Bend Heroes Foundation and volunteers will honor the 2,400 service men and civilians killed and another 1,000 wounded. American flags will be installed at Bend Heroes Memorial in Brooks Park and on Veterans Memorial Bridge (Newport Ave.). Bend’s only living Pearl Harbor Survivor, Mr. Dick Higgins, and WWII Veterans will be the honored guests. Volunteers needed! Assemble at Bend Heroes Memorial in Brooks Park (corner of Newport Ave. and NW Drake Rd.) at 8:00 am for the 30 minute ceremony. DECEMBER 9 – HOLIDAY EXPRESS TRAIN RIDE! around Bend. Boarding time is at 4:15pm at 2221 NE 3rd Street in Bend. Train departs at 4:30pm and returns at 6:00pm. Rumor has it that Santa may be onboard, plus hot chocolate and snacks, plus maybe some ornaments for the kids. BNSF’s priority for attendance for this event is current military and their families. This includes Reserve, Active Branches of Military, and the Guard (Air, Army, Coast). BNSF will also have waiting lists for Veterans and others to be sure the train is at full capacity. RSVP to Darlene Strupith at darlene.o.strupith.ctr@mail.mil

DECEMBER 10 – ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARTY at the Jefferson County Community Center @ 5pm, 860 SW Madison St. Madras, Oregon, 97741. DECEMBER 11 – CENTRAL OREGON VETERANS COUNCIL MEETING at 1400 at VFW Post 1643, @ 1503 NE 4th St, Bend OR 97701. Featured speakers: Ed Owens, Director of Advanced Training: Grief Recovery Method (GRM); and Gordon Price and Marcus Legrand from COCC to discuss “Evolve”, the relationship between law enforcement and communities of color.

DECEMBER 14 – WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA – Once again this year, the Bend American Legion and Auxiliary are honoring U.S. military service members who have gone before us, by laying wreaths on their graves at Christmas time. This is done through the Wreaths Across America program. By sponsoring one or more wreaths at $15 each, you can provide wreaths for these volunteers to place on the grave of a Veteran and honor his or her memory. The Bend remembrance ceremony will begin at Deschutes Memorial Gardens Chapel on December 14, at 9 am., followed by the laying of wreaths there and at Greenwood Cemetery. You are invited to attend the ceremony and help place wreaths.
